Orange Sugar - 52 Small Batch Canning


OH BOY Flavored Sugar!

This is one of those "Have to make this" recipes so that "I can make That" recipes (come back tomorrow to see an AMAZING Grown Up Orange Sugar Cookie).  The Oils in the Orange Zest mix and combine with the Sugar and you have a whole better than the two parts.

Simple to make and a delicious inexpensive giftable item for the brother (and sister) cooks in your life that deserve a little something something extra.

In the spirit of my "52 Small Batch Canning Ideas" series, I made 5 cups worth.  It doesn't take much more effort to make that much than it would to make just a single cup's worth.  Since I made 5 cups worth, I was able to make to make not only these delicious sweet and savory Orange Scented Snowballs (come back tomorrow for that recipe), But also a wonderful Orange Pound Cake (next week sometime).  Sure, these recipes would work well with plain sugar and Orange Extract... But the Simple to make Orange Sugar sure took those recipes to the next level!

OK... Here's what I did...


Orange Sugar


Ingredients
  • 5 Medium Oranges JUST THE ZEST
  • 5 Cups Sugar
Cooking Directions
  1. Zest the oranges.
  2. Mix the sugar with the Orange Zest. Use your fingers and SQUEEZE the zest into the sugar. This releases the oils in the zest (where all of the flavor rests) for a burst of Extra Orange flavor.
  3. If the sugar is moist at all, add extra sugar. The mix depends on how much zest is in each Orange... Big Oranges may produce more zest than you need. Just add more sugar.
  4. Let the mix sit in a sealed jar overnight so the oils and flavors infuse into the sugar.
  5. WARNING:  The flavored sugar needs to stay room temperature but needs to be used within  no more than 7 days
  6. Use for anything you use plain sugar for (even coffee) for a burst of Orange flavor

So,  I am pleased to list this as one of my very favorite Growing list of  "52 Small Batch Canning Ideas"!!!

I love Canning! Love the idea of it, Love having my own Jellies, Pickled produce, Sauces, Chutneys... All those pint, half pint, 4 Ounce jars,,, Even big quart jars of Spaghetti Sauce Lined up in my basement storage shelves.  Small batch means I can usually finish a project in no more than an hour of hands on work and usually less.  Easy DIY Projects that last a month or more... Great ideas for first time canners!

This simple recipe has been added to my growing list of "52 Simple but Next Level Dishes"!

Kind of an odd title for these posts. But the longer sentence is... Simple recipes that are easy and inexpensive that will take your cooking to the next level... Things like easy pickled items (I always have a jar of Pickled Red Onions for sandwiches in my fridge). Or how about the easiest bread to make in the world... Beer Bread that is tasty on it's own but also makes a wonderful open face pizza style sandwich... With easy to make Tomato Sauce. Or how about Roasting Garlic for a spread on toast points for a unique appetizer. Infusing Oil with Herbs or spices or spicy peppers. Or how about making your own BBQ sauce. Nothing sets you apart as a grill master like setting out a jar of your own specialty BBQ Sauce.

You get the idea. These recipes are very simple, take very little time but will set you apart as a better cook...
