EASY Beer Bread - Stop buying pre-packaged mixes, Make your Own 1/2 the Cost

It happened again...

Very well thinking friends gave me another "premium" beer bread pre-packaged mix (just add your favorite beer).  While any and all gifts are always appreciated and I would never dream of making an issue to the gift giver, this is one of my pet peeves.

The mix consists of flour, a leavening agent (baking powder usually)and sugar.  That's it.  Look in my pantry anytime and I always have those ingredients, and usually I have a bottle of beer laying about.

These mixes usually have a price tag of about $5.  The ingredients from my pantry cost less than a dollar.

Beer bread is probably the easiest bread to make.  there is no rising time, no kneading, just mix, bake and serve.  If you own a measuring spoon and cup, easy as could be.

OK... Here's what I did...

Beer Bread

Ingredients
  • 3 Cups Flour
  • 4-1/2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 Big Pinch Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Sugar
  • 1 Bottle (12 Ounces) Beer, room temperature
  • 2 TBS Butter, Melted
Cooking Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Butter a loaf pan and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the flour, Baking Powder, Salt, sugar, and beer and mix well. The mixture should be sticky.
  3. Pour into the loaf pan and bake for 55 minutes.
  4. At the last 3 minutes of baking, remove from oven, brush the top of the loaf with butter and return to oven.
  5. Serve WARM and ENJOY!!!
Any beer will work.  This was made with an Abita beer from New Orleans.  Make some with a stout and you have a different taste.  Play around to find your favorite.

And if you get creative, mix in fresh herbs (before baking), or how about grated cheddar cheese... or be exotic and try crumbles of Feta cheese.

And of course, everything is better with BACON!
